How Do You Change a Car Tire? Step by Step Guide

Before changing a tire, you’ll need to gather the following tools:

  • Jack
  • Lug Wrench
  • Spare or New Tire
  • Owner’s Manual

Make sure you’re either on the side of the road or another safe place with your hazard lights on and parking brake engaged, then follow these steps:

  • Place wheel wedges under the tires that don’t need changing.
  • Remove the hubcap or wheel cover from the old tire.
  • Loosen the lug nuts.
  • Raise your vehicle using the jack, then remove the lug nuts.
  • Carefully remove the current tire, then mount the new or spare tire.
  • Tighten the lug nuts, then lower your vehicle to the ground.

If you’re fitting a spare, remember it’s only supposed to be temporary. You shouldn’t travel on a spare more than 50 miles or over 50 mph, so schedule servicing as soon as possible to get a new tire.

How Often to Change Car Tires

It’s not much use for Brookings drivers to learn how to change a car tire if they don’t know when to do it. So, not sure how often to change car tires? That answer is going to depend on how often your tires are rotated. If you rotate them as recommended, your tires should last the estimated mileage. As a good rule of thumb, try scheduling tire rotation whenever you get your oil changed.

You should also check air pressure every couple of weeks to make sure it’s at the recommended rating, and it’s worth keeping tabs on tread wear.
